Proper Roof Ventilation in the Winter

Maintaining proper roof ventilation in the winter is an important part of ensuring the comfort and safety of your home. When a good ventilation system is in place, your roof and attic work together to draw in cool, dry air and release moist, heated air. This process maintains an even temperature throughout the attic and minimizes the risk of moisture accumulating and causing damage. Here is a look at what you need to do to ensure your roof's ventilation is designed properly and working efficiently.

Make Sure Roof and Attic Vents Are Clear and Open

The roof's vents are essential to proper airflow in the attic. During the coldest months of the year, these vents allow moist air to escape while drawing in dry air. This process protects your attic and roof against moisture buildup and the growth of unhealthy mold spores. You should inspect your vents to ensure they are clear of debris and remove any debris that exists at least once a year.

Inspect Attic Fans

At least once a year, you should check your attic fans for signs of blockage and debris. If the fans are electrical ones, be sure to turn the power off before tackling this task. Clear away any blockage and wipe the vanes of the fans clean. Once you are finished with this task, you can turn on the power switch for the fans.

Check Your Attic's Insulation

Installing insulation in the attic prevents heated air from entering this area of the home. Get an inspection for the attic to evaluate its current level of insulation. If your attic is not insulated, you may want to insulate it now. If yourinsulation is old and dirty, it is worthwhile to replace it. Dirty insulation does not work as efficiently as clean insulation. Weather stripping the door to the attic also helps prevent heated air from escaping through the roof.

Maintaining your roof's ventilation system is important to minimize the risk of moisturecollecting on the shingles, roof decking, and attic. Each year, you shouldinspect your attic and roof for signs of debris buildup and damage. Fix any problems that exist. If you prefer, you can hire your local roofing company to handle this task for you. Taking steps to remedy the lack of appropriate ventilation to prevent moisture buildup helps minimize the dangers of structural damage and mold.
